Corona Island, The World’s Only Single-Use Plastic-Free Island Opens

Last year, the beer brand Corona, revealed plans to create Corona Island. Corona Island would be a getaway that champions a lifestyle of wellness and sustainability.

It now seems the company has made good on its promise with the announcement of Corona Island’s grand opening. The new eco-destination is located off the coast of Colombia.

The “fist of its kind” paradise will encourage guests to reconnect with nature through immersive experiences and without the use of any single-use plastic products

Co plan and create Corona Island, Corona paired up with the nonprofit Oceanic Global to create the world’s first Blue Verified Island. This means it’s a three star certified plastic-free locale.

The Blue Seal means the resort has eliminated the use of use-plastic and employs eco-friendly operating practices for construction, energy production, food sourcing, and even the guest experience.

“On Corona Island, we are celebrating the majesty and beauty of the outdoors by getting guests engaged in protecting paradise. We look forward to welcoming visitors, rekindling their relationship with nature, and hopefully creating more advocates to protect our natural world,” quipped Felipe Ambra, Global Vice President for Corona.

For the design of the resort and guest experience, the island tapped the architectural firm of James & Mau along with local architect Jairo Márquez, and its leisure programs are curated by former Miss Universe Paulina Vega.

Additionally, Oceanic Global’s Blue School will offer workshops for guests and sustainable menus of locally sourced foods have been created by Chris Carpenter, a chef featured on MasterChef Colombia.

“Oceanic Global is honored to help develop the Corona Island experience and applauds Corona’s sector-leading sustainability efforts,” said Lea d’Auriol, Founder of Oceanic Global.

“We’re proud to have worked with Corona from the beginning of the project to ensure that this sustainable destination demonstrates how travelers can experience paradise for both leisure and educational purposes, while leaving a minimal trace behind.”
