How to Use Bangkok’s BTS Skytrain

Bangkok traffic can be the worst, but you can avoid being stuck in car or taxi, especially during rush hour by using the BTS Skytrain, so it’s definitely good to know how to use the BTS Skytrain.

If you’re visiting Bangkok and want to spend as little time as possible in transit between locations, use the BTS Skytrain. It’s one of the most convenient ways to get around because it connects all of the city’s major areas.

The BTS Skytrain connects to the MRT subway system, Airport Rail Link, Chao Phraya Express Boat, and Khlong Taxi Boats.

The BTS operates from 06:00 in the morning to midnight and has 2 lines, the Sukhumvit Line and the Silom Line.

The Sukhumvit Line runs from Khu Khot in the north to Kheha in the southeast.The Silom Line runs from National Stadium near the center of the city to Bang Wa at the southwestern corner of Bangkok.

Transfer to the MRT

You can transfer the MRT subway at Ha Yaek Lat Phrao, Mo Chit, Asok, Sala Daeng, and Bang Wa stations. You can use the MRT system to reach Chinatown or JJ Market.

At Saphan Taksin you can catch the Chao Phraya Express Boat, which is a great way to explore the riverside and get some scenic views of some of the older p-arts of the city.

Transfer to the Airport Rail Link

And Phaya Thai will connect you to the Airport Rail Link that transports travelers and locals to and from Suvarnabhumi Airport.

Riding the BTS Skytrain

To use the BTS you’ll need to buy a ticket. Pricing of the tickets is based on the distance being traveled.

Do you only have large bills or don’t have the right coins? You can exchange money or even buy a ticket at the windowed kiosks located at each station near the ticket gates.

However, if you’re ready to buy a ticket, Simply tap the English option at the top right corner of the screen and then select your station on the touch screen. You can also select how many tickets you need to purchase. You’ll then be prompted to put your bills or coins into the machine.

Don’t forget your change!

Collest your ticket(s) and then proceed through the gate by tapping the ticket on the sensor. Head up tot he platform for your direction.

When waiting for the train, wait at the arrows. Keep the area in front of the doors free and allow others to exit the train before you enter.
