Bangkok is known for temples, markets, nightlife, and bad traffic. Being stuck in traffic is a low point of any holiday. As traveler, you should know there are ways to avoid the infamous Bangkok traffic jams.
Bangkok’s subway, known as the MRT is one of the best ways to avoid Bangkok traffic when moving around the city.
The MRT doesn’t connect to as many popular tourist stops as the BTS Skytrain, but it does connect to the BTS and a few important points like the Jatujak Weekend Market, Sukhumvit Road, and Airport Rail Link
The MRT runs daily from 6AM until Midnight with trains arriving every 5 minutes.
There Bangkok MRT system has 2 lines. The Blue Line and the Purple Line. The Blue Line runs from Bang Sue to Lak Sang and connects to the BTS at Mo Chit, Ha Yaek Lat Phrao, Sukhumvit, Sala Daeng, and Bang Wa.
It also connects to the Airport Rail Link at Phetchaburi Station and at Tao Poon the Blue Line connects to the Purple Line.
Riding the MRT
Bangkok’s MRT stations are well marked and clearly visible at street level. There are stairs but an escalators and elevators can also be used.

- Grab your change and token
Alternatively VISA and Mastercard holders can tap their credit cards at the ticket gates instead of buying a token.
Children under 14 and Adults over 60 years of age ride at half rate. Half rate tickets must be purchased at the window and not at the machines.
Tap the token and walk through the gate.
The platforms are labeled by the terminal station for that direction. If you don’t know or recall the last station in the direction you’re traveling, Use the maps and guides at the platform level.
On the train there are displays showing the MRT map and announcements for the next station.
After exiting the train, you can use maps on the station wall to find the best exit.
Insert your token and walk through the gate and head to your exit number.
