It certainly isn’t a secret that cruise ships are responsible for a large amount of emissions. Ship engines not only carry a large hotel on the seas but also need to run while in port Mediterranean Shipping Company’s cruise subsidiary, Explora Journeys, has possibly found a solution with two new vessels.
The Explora V and Explora VI are scheduled to set sail in 2027 and 2028 respectively. Italian shipyard Fincantieri is partnering with Explore Journeys to build the ships.
The defining feature of these two new cruise ships is a six-megawatt hydrogen power cell that will provide enough green energy to power the ship when docked in port. This means that all engines can be powered off while in port and thus eliminating pier side emissions. The hydrogen battery solves the problem of cruise ships emitting carbon dioxide emissions while guests are exploring destinations.
Each ship will be outfitted with liquified natural gas (LNG). LNG is currently the cleanest commercial marine fuel. To enable this new file to be used by the ship’s engines, a containment system housed in each ship will use liquid hydrogen. As a result the engines will reduce CO2 emissions by nearly 25%.
The Explora V and VI will be 62 feet longer than their sibling cruise ships., The added length is to accommodate the new LNG fuel and batteries. Furthermore this added length has opened up opportunities for new types of suites and different amenities.
The two hydrogen powered cruise ships are just the latest additions to Explore Journey’s fleet of unreleased ships. Its debut ship is the Explora I, which is regularly fueled and scheduled to set sail in 2023.
