Mahanakhon SkyWalk – The Best View of Bangkok at 314 Meters Above the Street

The King Power Mahanakhon is one of Bangkok’s premium attractions. And a nightmare for those with a fear of heights. But, if you can get over your fear of heights, the Mahanakhon SkyWalk is perfect for all visitors all year round.

The King Power Mahanakhon can simply be described as just, “super cool”. It combines the most unique views of the city with an exciting guest experience at 314 meters above Bangkok. If you haven’t heard of it already, the Mahnakhon SkyWalk is the highest observation deck in Thailand. It also features the one the world’s largest glass trays, at 310 meters above the street.

The King Power Mahanakhon is the tallest rooftop bar in Bangkok, and Thailand for that matter. Previously this title was held by the Baiyoke Sky Bar. But we’re getting ahead of ourselves here..

The Mahanakhon is not to be missed while you’re in Bangkok. Other than the building being the second tallest in Thailand, what makes it iconic for the city is it’s impossible to miss design.

Located at the heart of Bangkok in the Silom-Sathorn area of the city, it’s easily reachable via the BTS Skytrain, it’s often called the Pixel Tower or the Tetris Building. The building consists of glass blocks and halfway around at the top there are “missing blocks”. This design characteristic gives the building a bizarre shape.

You might also notice the Mahanakhon CUBE, which is full of restaurants. But inside the main tower you’ll find the observation areas, rooftop Sky Beach, the Ritz-Carlton residences, and The Standard Hotel Mahanakhon.

Enough background, now on to the main attraction.

Getting to the Top & The Mahnakhon Skywalk

First you need to purchase a ticket. You can pre-purchase online through various travel websites such as Klook.

But, if you have your ticket, you must first go through a metal detector and send your bags through a scanner. Almost like at the airport. Also like the airport, no drinks and food can be taken with you. Also, bags larger than 22 x 35 x 56 cm are not allowed. However, to the right of the security area you’ll find ATMs and free lockers. (10:00 to 24:00).

So don’t worry if you have too many things.

Oh, and if you have some time  and want to play a little game, in the lobby you’ll find the Mahanakhon SkyRides. This is a 2 minute VR paragliding experience.

After going through the gates you’ll enter a special corridor. Be sure to look up. It’s Bangkok upside down!

You’ll then step into an elevator, where the oohs and ahhs start before you’ve even reached the top. This elevator is no ordinary elevator. The doors close, the sound comes on, and the walls turn into screens. This show only lasts until you reach the 74th floor, a whole 50 seconds. This time literally flies by.

Those seeking bird’s eye views of Bangkok will be rewarded with stunning panoramic views from both indoor and outdoor viewing areas.

On the 74th floor is a large hall with floor to ceiling windows. Here you have a full view of the landscape in all directions. There are seats throughout the area. You can take your time and see Bangkok in chill mood. There are also interactive touch screens and other visual aids to help you get orientated.

From the 74th floor you take an escalator to the 75th floor where you’ll catch a beautiful glass elevator to the 78th floor.

Stepping out of the elevator you’re immediately in the open air, and what people come for, the view. It is spectacular both during day and night.

You’ll first pass by the bar and then the Glass Tray will come into view.

The Glass Tray

This is something that must be done.

Put the protective covers over your shoes and gingerly step out onto the Glass Tray.

Looking down from 310 meters above the ground you can watch the BTS Skytrain snake through the city like a miniature model, or the long lines of glowing headlights during evening traffic. The feeling of the experience is difficult to describe. You just have to experience it yourself.

Also note, no objects can be taken with you beyond the chains. So you can’t carry your phone or camera with you for a photo of your feet.

Bear in mind that weekends are typically better than weekdays. Go on a Saturday and it’ll be busy at peak times. But later at night or during weekdays you’ll have more space to yourself for those all too necessary photos.

The Mahanakhon Sky Beach

You can also climb another 4 meters up the Sky Beach. This is the highest point of King Power Mahanakhon. From the Sky Beach there’s an uninterrupted 360 degree view of Bangkok.

Sunset from the Sky Beach is fantastic, and for that reason one of the most popular times of day.

After all that excitement relaxing with a drink at Thailand’s highest rooftop bar. Chill on seats along the Sky Beach or other tables lining the edge of the observation deck.

Don’t want a cocktail or special Mahanakhon beer? Enjoy a smoothie, mocktail, or soft drink.

Oh, and if you come in the evening there’s a live band or DJ.

When To Go?

So, when should you visit the Mahanakhon SkyWalk?

The most popular time is around sunset. And for good reason because the views are simply beautiful as the city transitions from daytime skies to nighttime lights. Depending on the time of year, sunset in Bangkok is between 18:00 and 19:00, so it’s best to arrive between 16:00 and 17:00 to be ahead of the crowds.

Prices are lower on weekdays and there are regular disoounts on the King Power Mahanakhon website as well as through travel agency websites. So, take a look around before you go.

Lastly, there is no dress code. Just come and enjoy the view. And maybe a drink or two.

TL;DR

The Mahnakhon SkyWalk is a must. Highlights includes the Glass Tray, one of the world’s largest glass floors on the 78th floor. Ride in Southeast Asia’s fastest elevators, and of course the amazing 360 degree views of Bangkok.
