Most of us know the Orient Express for its renowned opulence, famous passengers, and for being the setting of an Agatha Christie novel. However, very few have been able to ride the Orient Express because it shut down in 1977.
However, 17 original Orient Express carriages were discovered in 2015 and the famed railway is now set for a comeback. It actually could be revived as the elegant way to travel across Europe just in time for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.
French hospitality company Accor purchased the carriages, which includes lounge cars, restaurant car, and luxurious sleeper cars. All of which still have their original Art Deco decor from their Golden Era.
According to Time Out, the train is no undergoing restoration in France. When relaunched, the refurbished carriages will be comprised of suites with attached bathrooms and an entire car for performances and events.
Travel + Leisure has reported that nine carriage interiors will be revealed in December with the remaining eight gradually revealed in 2024. Guillaume de Saint Lager, Vice President of Orient Express, said that its designers are looking for the perfect balance of “past, present, and future.”
As of now it’s anticipated that the train will travel its original route between Istanbul and Paris. The onboard food service menu will be served with inspiration from the original Orient Express food menus.
“The rebirth of the Orient Express is a technological challenge, meeting scientific, artistic, and technical criteria, where the entire project has been conceived as a work of art. From the nuts and bolts stamped with the Orient Express’ signature to the innovative concept of the suites, an exact science of detail will allow travelers to rediscover the great splendor of the Orient Express,” said Maxime d’Angeac, an architect on the project.
“Entrusted to the best artisans and decorators specializing in their unique fields, this embassy of French luxury will unveil a setting of absolute refinement, faithful to the art of tailoring. It will be an incomparable train travel experience, imaged through a contemporary vision of comfort and extreme luxury.”
