Portugal has now added itself to the growing list of countries offering digital nomad visas for remote workers. The new visa program allows digital nomads to live and work in the country for up to 12 months. Portugal is hoping to boost its economy by injecting more residents into the country’s cities and towns.
One of the lasting effects of the COVID pandemic has been the shift to hybrid or remote work models. The new office is a kitchen table, sofa, or guest rooms. And a growing list of countries known for their appealing climates and beautiful landscapes have begun offering visas specifically for remote workers, commonly referred to as digital nomads.
Portugal is popular amongst retirees for its D7 visa, which offers passive income earners the opportunity to obtain Portuguese residency. Until the announcement of this new visa, the D7 was used by many digital nomads because it allowed anyone to live in the country so long as they earn over the Portuguese minimum wage of €822.50 per month. The other requirement was that the individual must reside in Portugal for a majority of the year.
The new digital nomad is similar and can be a gateway to a D7 visa.
Business Insider reports that individuals can apply at a Portuguese Consulate in their home country, or at Portugal’s immigration agency, Serviço de Estrangeiros e Fronteiras. Applicants must show proof of income for the last three months, submit tax residency documents and a contract of employment (or proof of self-employment). Visa holders would able to travel visa-free throughout the Schengen Area.
