Time Out magazine released its list of the Coolest Neighborhoods in the World for 2022, with Guadalajara’s Colonia American taking the top spot.
Every year the magazine conducts a poll of thousands of people around the world to create the Time Out Index. This year, 20,000 residents and local experts were asked to rank their greatest places for fun, food, culture, and community in their cities.
It’s been a rough few years for the world at large – but in many ways, a fantastic one for neighbourhoods.

The survey asks questions about the “coolest pots in the city right now”. Then input from local residents is combined with the opinion’s of the magazine’s local writers and editors. The magazine editors do admit that the word “cool” is subjective, but also include that there is some criteria for choosing the neighborhoods.
All of the neighborhoods featured in the list have accessible “cutting edge” cultural scenes and nightlife, “brilliant and affordable” restaurants and bars, lively street life, and big “community vibes”. The neighborhoods are supposed to be ideal for both living and visiting. They’re places that you could pass through in 30 minutes or spend an entire day to explore all the neighborhood’s nooks and crannies.
Of course, ‘cool’ is probably the most subjective quality going. But the neighbourhoods we’ve featured below are, simply put, incredible places to be right now.
