Unilever Replacing Intercontinental Hotels’ Wasteful Single Use Toiletries

There are people who love to take the complimentary bottles of lotion and shampoo, and you might be one of them. Although some of us might love to take the bottles to replenish the stockpile at home, we must also admit that it’s a little on the wasteful side when considering that each guest is given three to four bottles for every day of their stay. Multiply that by the hundreds of rooms in thousands of hotels around the world. You can see the problem, right?

Intercontinental Hotels Group (IHG) and Unilever have partnered in an effort to create a more sustainable future. Single use toiletries will be removed from IHG hotels and replaced by full size bottles placed in the shower area.

Dove will be the soap of choice for Holiday Inn, Holiday Inn Express, Staybridge Suites, and Candlewood Suites. These IHG brands is where the initiative will first be launched.

In the Americas alone the switch to full size bottles will save 850 tonnes of plastic. According to IHG, the move comes after a 2019 pledge to remove all single use toiletries from all of its hotel brands by 2030.

Unilever also has similar goals and this synergy has led to the partnership. The removal of single use plastic is a move in that direction.

As you might expect, hotels use a lot of energy too ket the building going and the guests comfortable. The elimination of some toiletries might seem inconsequential, but every little bit helps make the way for a greener future.
