Wat Pakhlong 11 – A Unique Pathumthani Temple

There are plenty of famous temples throughout Thailand that make it on people’s travel itineraries. Furthermore, the abundance of temples in Thailand means you have to pick and choose which are worth your limited time when visiting.

There is one that you might want to add to your list, as it’s just outside of Bangkok in Pathumthani. The name of this temple is Wat Pakhlong Sip-et, or Wat Pakhlong 11.

The temple isn’t an old one, it was established in 1999. Here you’ll find a small chapel and temple set on expansive grounds. The temple area is situated within large tract of land measuring 17 rai. The real draw for visitors is the small chapel in the center of the pond.

When visiting you’ll know you’ve reached the temple grounds by the distinctive front gate adorned with a pair of King Naga statues. You’ll find that the Naga is a focal point of this temple.

Beyond the gate is a very long road surrounded by empty fields. There are no vendors within the temple area, but there are some around the entrance.

As you enter the temple area you’ll spot the chapel in the center of the pond. The chapel’s entrance is guarded by 2 pairs of King Naga statues.

At these statues as well as around the chapel you’ll find small statues and offerings.

Enter the chapel because it’s usually open and walk around the chapel and take the time to admire the detailed workmanship throughout the chapel and stonework.

The incredibly long tails of each Naga statue stretch and intertwine as they wrap around the chapel’s island. You might find yourself wondering about these multi-headed serpents that you see at this temple and others throughout Thailand.

The Naga is a mythical creature that lives in the Mekong River. They’re seen as fearsome guardians that deter bad spirits and bad luck.

Often the naga are connected with gods in both Hindu and Buddhist stories. For example, in one such story, King Naga uses its many heads to shield Buddha from a storm.

In the past, visitors have claimed to spot King Naga in the pond. However, we’ll leave the validity of these claims up to you.

There’s another, more modern looking building that houses a Buddha statue behind a shrine. You can take the steps up to this building to see the statue and shrine.

There are also some smaller shaded areas you can explore that might hold some surprises.
